Schools in greater Seoul area to resume in-person classes next Monday

21일 수도권 등교 재개…등교 인원 유초중 1/3•고 2/3 제한

With the COVID-19 situation beginning to stabilize, classrooms in the capital region will finally reopen, but with some limitations.
Meanwhile, various measures are taken to improve the quality of online lessons following complaints from parents.
Jang Tae-hyun has the full story.
Schools in the greater Seoul area will resume in-person classes starting next Monday.
But, they will be required to adhere to certain guidelines with the Chuseok holiday fast approaching.
“As social distancing measures have been eased,… schools in the capital region Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi-do Province will resume in-person classes next Monday. However, taking into consideration the special quarantine period during the holiday season, schools should stick to the guidelines to keep it less crowded.”
For kindergarten through middle school, classes can be held at one-third of capacity.
For high schools, it’s two-thirds.
This applies from September 21st until October 11th.
Special education schools, schools with fewer than 60 students… and those in rural areas will be allowed to hold classes in person at their own discretion.
After October 12th, the education ministry will make a decision on whether to continue with partial in-person classes depending on the COVID-19 situation.
The government will also continue to offer childcare services from 9 AM to 7 PM to help working parents.
In the meantime, due to concerns among parents regarding the quality of online classes,… steps have been taken to establish an avenue of communication between teachers and students.
“We will let schools offer two-way, interactive classes at least once a week… and use a live chat function for instant feedback. Not only that, but we will advise teachers to call or use their personal social media accounts to contact the students and their parents.”
And to help any students who may have been struggling to follow lessons online, the education ministry is also planning to hire around 10-thousand additional teachers for after school top-up classes.
